Applied & Interdisciplinary Mathematics
AIM Rationale and Mission
The
AIM program is designed to
be attractive to students
who enjoy the interaction
of mathematics with science
and/or engineering. The students
in our Ph.D. program do not
necessarily have an undergraduate
degree in mathematics but
instead come from a range
of undergraduate degrees.
The
important aspect they share is
that they are comfortable with
mathematical concepts and have
a strong interest in some partner
discipline such as biology, finance,
control theory or fluid mechanics
to name a few. Our students will
be suitably trained for a research
career where mathematical sophistication
is increasingly important.
The
academic structure of the
AIM program is detailed within this website but before
presenting these details,
we wish to emphasize its
integrated nature. Students must have two
co-advisers. One can be any faculty
member of the Mathematics
Department and the other must be chosen
from any department other than mathematics
at the University of Michigan.
AIM
differs significantly from
the current mathematics graduate
program in the requirements
that all AIM students do
extensive coursework outside
the Mathematics Department,
pass an preliminary examination,
and complete interdisciplinary
thesis research, possibly
spending much of their time
outside of
the Mathematics Department.
