AIM Overview of the Ph.D. Program
In the AIM Program students engage in an interdisciplinary
research program which involves mathematics and a partner area such as
engineering, biology,
economics or physics. Because AIM attracts students with diverse
backgrounds, one of the initial requirements is for all students to exhibit a
sufficiently strong command of the mathematics so they can take appropriate
graduate level mathematics
courses. This is the goal of the written examinations which must be passed by the
beginning of the second year.
Students in AIM program are required to take both mathematics courses and courses
in a partner discipline. To faciliate the choice of a partner
discipline the students are requires to attend the AIM research seminar and
the introductory seminar for their first three semsters (Math 501).
Students will also choose two advisers for
their PhD thesis one must come from the mathematics department and the other from
outside mathematics. In this way, each AIM PhD thesis will make an original contribution,
using novel mathematical ideas, to a field outside mathematics.
