Carl H. Fischer Endowed Collegiate
Professorship
The Carl H. Fischer
Endowed Collegiate Professorship
was established to honor long
time Department of Mathematics
faculty member Carl H. Fischer. Fischer
passed away in 1988.
Fischer had a long and interesting
actuarial career and provided
wise advice to many groups. He
taught at the University from
1941 until his retirement in
1974. In 1950, he was appointed
Professor of Insurance and Actuarial
Mathematics, a joint appointment
in the School of Business Administration
and the Department of Mathematics. Through
it he encouraged business and
insurance education of actuarial
students. He is remembered
as having the knack for breaking
complicated matters down into
simpler components, and communicating
them in his teaching and writing. Many
students appreciated this quality.
In a busy career, Fischer
served on many important committees
of the University and was an
active Fellow of the Society
of Actuaries and of the Conference
of Actuaries in Public Practice. Fischer
was a member of the Advisory
Council on Social Security, and
his advice was sought by a number
of other federal and state commissions. He
was a consultant on social
security to the Philippines
and to Liberia.
The Professorship was funded
through a charitable remainder
annuity trust and estate plan
established by Fischer’s
wife, Kathleen, to assure that
his legacy continues in the Department
of Mathematics and the Actuarial
Program. After Kathleen’s
passing in 1999, the endowment
continues to be supported by
Fischer’s sons, Patrick
and Michael, both of whom graduated
from UM with degrees in Mathematics.
