Shadows of mapping class groups: capturing convex co-compactness.
I'll discuss recent joint work with Richard Kent on convex co-compactness in the mapping class group. This notion was invented by Farb and Mosher in analogy with the concept of the same name in the theory of Kleinian groups, and is closely related to delta-hyperbolicity of the associated surface group extension of the subgroup. For Kleinian groups there are several equivalent definitions for convex co-compactness. We prove the equivalence of the analogous definitions for subgroups of the mapping class group.

Topic: Deformation theory of hyperbolic 3-manifolds
