Heegaard splittings and hyperbolic geometry
We will discuss a new approach toward understanding Heegaard splittings and their relation with the geometry of a closed 3-manifold by using hyperbolic geometry. Our method uses deformation theory of hyperbolic structures on manifolds with compressible boundary and in particular handlebodies to describe the hyperbolic structure on closed 3-manifolds. We can use this technique for a family of hyperbolic structures and splittings which have, what we call, "bounded combinatorics." We will try to mention some interesting applications of this approach as well.

Topic: Deformation theory of hyperbolic 3-manifolds
