Math 105 Overview

Prerequisites: 3-4 years of high school math.

Frequency: This course is offered Fall (I), Winter(II) and Summer(IIIb) terms

Credits: 4 credits

Textbook: Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for Calculus, 3rd Edition
Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et. al., 2007

105 textbook

A TI-84 Graphing Calculator (or equivalent) is required. If you have a graphing calculator other than the TI-84, you will be responsible for knowing how to operate it on your own.

Student Body: Largely first year students

Background and Goals: Math 105 serves both as a preparatory class to the calculus sequences and as a terminal course for students who need only this level of mathematics. Students who understand the material in 105 are fully prepared for Math 115.

Content: This course presents the concepts of precalculus from four points of view: geometric (graphs), numeric (tables), symbolic (formulas), and written (verbal descriptions). The emphasis is on the mathematical modeling of real-life problems using linear, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Students develop their reading, writing, and questioning skills in an interactive classroom setting.

Subsequent Courses: This course prepares students for Math 115.
