Explorations in Mathematics - Course Calendar Winter 2013

Class meetings:

Meetings are scheduled for 5-6:30+ Wednesday afternoons, in East Hall, room B743. For most of the semester these meetings will be devoted to oral project reports. Attendance is required.

Consultation with Course Staff:

Teams must meet with course staff at least once a week in addition to the regular class time. The computer room B743 will be staffed Monday through Friday 5-7 PM (if number of instructors permits)

  No class; first class Monday Jan 14.
• Week 1 (Jan 14 - Jan 18)
  Monday: First class, introduction, structure of course, how projects work, forming teams
  Wednesday: First main meeting, discuss doing research, project choice
  Friday: Choice of topic for first project due.
• Week 2 (Jan 21 - Jan 25)
  Monday: MLK Day; No class
  Wednesday: lecture (computer-assisted math exploration)
  Begin work on first project.
• Week 3 (Jan 28 - Feb 1)
  Wednesday: lecture (latex- typesetting)
  Friday: Short report on first project, with data and tentative conclusions is due.
• Week 4 (Feb 4-Feb 8)
  Wednesday: lecture (how to write up a project)
  Friday: Draft of the first project report, and choice of topic for second project are due.
• Week 5 (Feb 11 - Feb 15)
  Wednesday: work session, feedback on draft paper, discuss presentations
  Friday: (Optional) revised report on first project due.
  Begin work on second project.
• Week 6 (Feb 16 - Feb 22)
  Wednesday: group presentation
  Friday: Final report on first project due.
• Week 7 (Feb 25-Mar 1)
  Wednesday: group presentation
