University Support Offices: Academic and Personal
Instructional Support The
individual schools and colleges (e.g. LSA, Engineering) have offices to help students
select and maintain an appropriate academic program. These offices are open throughout the
year and students should be encouraged to meet with a counselor both on a routine basis
and whenever an academic problem arises. As an instructor you can give your students
information about their progress in your class, but they should make academic decisions in
consultation with an counselor from the appropriate school or college. Listed below are
descriptions of some of the offices to which you may refer students.
- LSA Academic Counseling Office (1255 Angell Hall, 764-0332) This office provides
advice in course planning, changing courses, and college curriculum requirements. The
office staff consists of full-time counselors, faculty and graduate students.
- Mathematics Department Undergraduate Program Office (2084 East Hall, 763-4223)
This office is the center for all activities relevant to the Undergraduate Program
including counseling, the Undergraduate Math Club, and information on jobs and graduate
school.
- Honors Program (1228 Angell Hall, 764-6274) The Honors Program provides special
courses, personalized counseling and undergraduate research options to students with
superior ability who are members of the Honors Program.
- Office of Academic Standards (1255 Angell Hall, 764-0311) This office is in
charge of LSA academic discipline and can grand exceptions to academic policies and
requirements.
- CRISP (G255 Angell Hall, 763-5174) This is the University's computerized course
registration facility.
- Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT, 109 E. Madison) The center
will assist instructors on matters related to teaching. CRLT gives a series of workshops
on teaching. CRLT administers the student course evaluation questionnaires at the end of
the term.
- Comprehensive Studies Program (G155 Angell Hall, 764-9128) This is a campus-wide
undergraduate support unit. The primary function of CSP is to enhance efforts to make the
university accessible to a wide range of students. It gives personalized academic
counseling and runs intensive sections in key courses in English, math, science, and
foreign languages. The program offers tutoring and provides assistance with internships
and work study.
- Minority Engineering Program Office (MEPO, 2327 EECS) The program assists
minority engineers with tutoring, study groups, academic advising, scholarship assistance
and career counseling.
Personal Support: Many University offices offer far-reaching support for
both undergraduates and graduate students. Adapting to the pressures of university life
can sometimes be difficult. You may want to use these services yourself, and you should
redirect any of your students who come to you needing extended personal guidance.
- Services for Students with Disabilities (Haven Hall) This office gives assistance
to any student with a disability. Staff member will act as intermediaries and advocates
with the faculty.
- Affirmative Action Office (Fleming Building) This office handles complaints or
questions about discrimination and provides pre-grievance counseling an matters of sexual
or racial harassment.
- Counseling Services (Michigan Union) A professional staff supplemented by student
interns and peer counselors provides confidential counseling for both undergraduates and
graduate students on any matter of personal concern. If there is a faculty member who is
voluntarily seeking help, they should contact the Coordinator for Faculty and Staff
Assistance at 998-7500.
