Assignment: Start thinking about your first-day handout sheet. You should have your draft approved by Friday.

9:00-10:30 Group I: Individual Practice Teaching (7 minutes each, videotaped)
      Instructors are videotaped giving a short lesson to other instructors; followed by a discussion.

10:30-12:00 Group II: Individual Practice Teaching (7 minutes each, videotaped)
      Instructors are videotaped giving a short lesson to other instructors; followed by a discussion.

1:00-2:30 Using Questions to Improve Thinking
      Discussion of interactive lecturing, asking and answering questions, and other methods for getting students to think.
      Viewing of video tapes of actual classroom scenes where instructors are asking and answering questions.

      Tips on running the class and managing the time

      Descriptions of a variety of techniques for getting students to work together in class, and strategies for organizing effective in-class groups

3:00-3:30 Using the First Day to Establish an Atmoshere for Active Learning
      Demonstration of a sample "first-day" followed by a discussion of what needs to be accomplished.

Assignment: Select an introductory topic that interests you and prepare a 15-minute cooperative learning activity on this topic. The GAT sheet has a list of problems which can provide you with some ideas. Use a technique that you might use in your own class to get students actively involved and thinking. The other "students" in your group will perform the exercise and then critique it. Thursday's simulated classrooms will have only 4 "students" in each room.
