Apply to the MMSS 2013 Program

Admissions are conducted on a rolling basis. The MMSS program will make every attempt to honor the student's top course preference, but when courses are full, we cannot accept anyone else to that class. Note: MMSS is a competitive program and each year we receive twice as many applicants as we can have attend.

There is no specific application deadline, but the sooner you complete your application, the better your chances of receiving your top preferred course.

The MMSS program application consists of the following required items:

  1. Online Registration & Application Form- You must create a University of Michigan Friend Account in the process.
  2. Letter of Recommendation- You will need your reference's email address.
  3. Student Personal Statement- Submitted via electronic application.
  4. High School Transcript (copies of all high school report cards are fine!)- Email, fax, or mail it in to our office. Fax: 734-763-0937.
  5. $100 Application Fee (check, credit card, money order, or wire transfer)- APPLICATION FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE.

Step-By-Step Application Process

  1. You will need a valid email account (e.g. yourname@gmail.com or firstname_lastname@yahoo.com). If you do not have one, you may create a free email address via a variety of providers. Click here for more information regarding creating an email account. All email providers are acceptable.
  2. You will then need to create a University of Michigan Friend Account. This is required in order to complete the online application. Follow the setup directions listed in the link above to create your Friend Account. Be sure to record your login and password in a safe place. The MMSS office will NOT be able to retrieve lost passwords for you. Click here if you forgot your University of Michigan Friend Account password.
  3. Once you have successfully created a University of Michigan Friend Account, click here to access the MMSS application (available January 2013). Once redirected to the web application, the next step is to register yourself with our program by clicking on the "registration" tab and filling in the required information fields. Upon completing this step, you should receive an email confirming your registration. The email address that you used to create your account will also become your main point of contact for our office throughout the application process, so please check it on a regular basis.
  4. Begin the application to the 2013 MMSS program by clicking on the "application" tab and filling in the required fields. You may write as much or as little as you want at a time and save your work by clicking the "save" button. However, you will not be able to submit the application until all required fields have been completed. Make sure you paste in your personal statement and a valid email address for your reference.
  5. Once all required fields in the "application" tab have been filled in, you may hit the "submit" button. This process will automatically generate an email with the letter of recommendation submit link to your listed reference. You will see an "event log" on the right side of the screen appear, indicating your application has been successfully submitted. In addition, you will receive a confirmation email. From this point forward, each time you sign back into your web application via your University of Michigan Friend Account, the "event log" on the right side of the screen will keep a record of your current progress.
  6. After submitting the application, you now need to pay the $100 non-refundable application fee. This can be done via check, money order, or credit card. (A wire transfer option is also available.) To pay via credit card, click the "pay" tab. Upon completion of credit card payment, you will receive an immediate confirmation email as well as an event status update. To pay via check, money order, or wire transfer, please send in your payment to our office at the address listed below. Be sure to write the name of the student on the check or money order. "Event log" notifications of check, money order, or wire transfer payments will take several days to appear after being submitted.
  7. When we have received all of your additional components (some of which are optional, such as the 2012 tax return for financial aid requests), you will see your "event log" update to reflect this information. Your application is then under review. For more information on how applications are processed, please click here.
  8. You will hear back from our office regarding an admissions decision via email as well as an update on your "event log." Those selected students attending the program will then be able to add optional services at this point in time, schedule airport and train/bus station shuttles, and pay any remaining balances.
