Lunch and Learn seminar series:

Thursday, July 20: "Modeling Infectious Diseases of the Lungs," with John Younger. Some patients are threatened after they enter the Emergency Room with severe forms of pneumonia contracted n the ER. Dr. Younger reports on how medical scientists are trying to save these patients from such perils hidden in the ER! Details here!

Monday, July 10: "The End of the Universe", with Fred Adams. What elementary particle physics let's us know about the VERY long time history of the Universe. And you thought geology was about things a long time ago! Here is a link to two Saturday Morning Physics talks Fred gave on these matters (or anti-matters, at times), including his online notes.

Eagle nebula, birthplace of stars

Thursday, July 13: "Wavelets: a Gentle Introduction", with Anna Gilbert. Wavelets are a powerful new technique in mathematical analysis (think: advanced calculus) which have proved very useful in signal processing and image restoration, noise reduction and many other areas of communications and scientific data management. More details here!

Tuesday, July 18: "Applying to College" with Susan Perreault and Rosa Acevedo. Professional advice on applying to college. Details here!

Tuesday, July 18: "How I Came to Be a Scientist" with Peter Toogood of Pfizer Global Research and Development. Question and Answer discussion about careers in science. How did one person make it from high school to such a career, and what are a teen's chancess of doing that now. Personal advice from a science professional. Peter will answer further questions for MMSS students via email: write to peter.toogood2_at_pfizer.com.

Monday, June 26: "Bridging the Gap: How Physics and Math Can Help Our Understanding of Lung Function and Gene Regulation" with Dr. Seth Blumberg, UM Medical Student. Using basic physics to help understand physiology and gene regulation. Lots of lab demonstrations! For a more extended set of lectures by Seth on these topics, see his online notes at the Saturday Morning Physics site.

Thursday, June 29:"Applying to College" with Susan Perreault and Josh Greenwald. Professional advice on applying to college. Details here!

Friday, June 30: "Error-Correcting Codes" with Martin Strauss. How one protects a message against loss of information, or tampering with privacy.

Martin Strauss and MMSSers

Thursday, July 6: "Clams, Climate and Global Change: a Geological Perspective" with Kacey Lohmann. How looking very carefully at dead clams (!) can tell you how the climate of the earth was changing millions of years ago with accuracy down to weeks!

Friday, July 7: "OVONIC Hydrogen-Powered Hybrid Automobile" with representatives of ECD Ovonics. Special Presentation and Demonstration on the East University Plaza.
