DESCRIPTION: Forest recruitment addresses questions about long-term forest stability. MMSS students in ‘Why Here’ measured three size classes of trees in the 25m sq study plot: trees over 20 cm in diameter, small trees under 15 cm in dia, and young trees from seedlings to .5m tall. In this photo, Julie, Hynwoo, Max, Pelin, Denise and Joonyoung (left to right) work as two teams on opposite sides of the 25m transect – for a total of 50 m sq of data – over 200 seedlings and juvenile trees to record. In some cases the young tree turns out to be laying down and actually rooted on the other side of the survey boundary (we don’t want extraneous data). David, Julie and Denise help with the species identification.
