Day #1 of Math and the Internet began with a discussion of what the internet is; both from the low-level (computers, connections, protocols) and the high level (Google, MySpace, World of Warcraft). Then we talked about numbers and different ways to write them. Binary will be our favorite way to write numbers in this class, so we spent a while learning to do arithmetic in binary.

Later, we started discussing how computers can deal with the fact that any communication channel will introduce errors into transmitted data.
