Mathematics and the Internet
7/24/08
Second last day of the course. We started off by solving three Markov Chains problems from the day before. Pete then talked about online auction modeling and population modeling using flour beetle as example. Next, we discussed the basics of the algorithm that Google uses that makes them so successful. The Kevin Bacon game was used to illustrate the point and everyone had fun talking about hollywood actors. As an exercise, in groups of two, the class drew graphs to find out who is the person center to the class. Finally, we left them hanging with the graph of bifurcation and the idea of chaos.
