Day 5 Today the surface science MMSS students gave presentations about special topics related to surface science. The topics presented today were "Surface science of lungs," "Friction," "Hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions," and "Metal surfaces."

Day 6 Today the Surface Science MMSS students studied pH in lab. They made buffer solutions and tested them using pH meters.

Day 7 Today the Surface Science MMSS students used Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to study and identify common polymers.

Day 8  

Day 9 Today the Surface Science MMSS students visited Prof. Chen's research lab to learn about the techniques used in the lab. Graduate students from Prof. Chen's lab taught the MMSS students about sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy and Langmuir Blodgett techniques. 

Day 10 This morning, the Surface Science MMSS students gave research presentations about topics related to surface science. The presentation topics included catalysis, chromatography, ultra high vacuum technology and the artificial heart.
