A Summer Program for Current High School Students

Welcome to the home page of the Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS), a program designed to introduce high school students to current developments and research in the sciences and to encourage the next generation of researchers to develop and retain a love of mathematics and science.

MMSS features small 15-student classes taught by University of Michigan professors, as well as other outstanding instructors from across the country. The small class size allows the student to receive a deeper exposure to a particular subject and to evaluate the University of Michigan not only as a summer program, but also as a place for future studies. Students take only one class per session and spend the majority of the day working on the class. Two 2-week sessions are offered; students are given the opportunity to attend one or both.

Each session offers courses from natural science departments within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts including Astronomy; Chemistry; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Earth and Environmental Sciences; Mathematics; Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology; Physics; Program in the Environment; and Statistics.

The MMSS program is a stepping stone for today's high school student to become tomorrow's university student. Students are able to use the first-class labs and technology at the University of Michigan while learning from their faculty, graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

Students are given the opportunity to learn about exciting research in math and science by attending courses with titles such as Fibonacci Numbers, Roller Coaster Physics, and Human Anatomy and Physiology.

Students will spend time in research and computer laboratories, as well as doing field work with their professors. They will catch a glimpse of the amazing career possibilities in math and science that are open to anyone with a thirst to learn. Like sponges, students will absorb critical information to help them select a career in the sciences.

MMSS is open to any rising sophomore, junior, or senior high school student from around the world. Residential and commuter options available.
