My main research area is combinatorics, especially its applications in representation theory, algebraic geometry, and other areas of mathematics.
In recent years, most of my research revolved around the following focal points: total positivity, cluster algebras, and Schubert calculus. My papers include a couple of surveys in these fields.
You may get an idea of the type of background one needs in order to conduct research in algebraic and geometric combinatorics by looking at the webpages of my graduate courses.
