Geometry and Topology

Personal Home Page

Most of my research has been on the topology of 3-dimensional manifolds, but I started working in group theory quite early in my career. The kind of group theory in which I am interested naturally arises when one studies 3-manifolds. It used to be called combinatorial group theory, but is now called geometric group theory. In the past several years, I have been working much more intensively in group theory, doing joint work with Gadde Swarup of the University of Melbourne. The motivation behind our ideas still comes from the theory of 3 manifolds.
