Title: Surgery constructions of Einstein metrics
Abstract: The focus of the talk is a generalization of Thurston's
Dehn surgery theory of hyperbolic 3-manifolds to Einstein manifolds
of any dimension. The analogy is particularly strong in dimension
4, and gives rise to large new families of Einstein metrics,
(as well as a new proof of Thurston's theory in dimension 3).
To set the stage, we will discuss the idea of constructing
smooth Einstein metrics by smoothing singular metrics (the singular
perturbation or "gluing" method). Time permitting, we'll also discuss
the possibility of other types of surgery or gluing methods for
Einstein metrics.
