Title: The Second Law of Probability
Abstract: The talk will explain how a geometric principle of Minkowski gave rise to a variational formula for information theoretic entropy which in turn led to the solution of an old problem: whether there is an analogue of the second law of thermodynamics for the central limit theorem. The talk will be accessible to graduate students and above in all branches of math.
