Title: The geometry of Out(F_n)
Abstract: The study of the outer automorphism group Out(F_n) of a rank n free group has a rich history starting in the early 1900s with the work of Nielsen and Whitehead. The landscape changed in the later part of the 20th century with the appearance of Culler-Vogtmann's Outer space and Bestvina-Handel's train track theory. As these threads continue actively today, we seem to be moving into a new era where the powerful geometric methods used by Masur-Minsky in their work on mapping class groups of surfaces are finding analogues in the world of Out(F_n). I will discuss some of these recent developments with a focus on joint work with Mladen Bestvina.
