Title: Theta Functions and Knots
Abstract: We will explain how to relate classical theta functions to knots and how to produce the main constructs of abelian Chern-Simons theory using insights from representation theory. This approach does not use quantum field theory and hence is different from Witten's. We will exhibit a quantum group model for the action of the Heisenberg group and of the modular group on theta functions. The talk is based on the joint work of the speaker with Alejandro Uribe and Alastair Hamilton.
