Mathematics Colloquium EVENT DETAIL Date:  Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Title:  Fixed point theorems and examples Abstract:  I shall discuss fixed point theorems for nice actions of finite groups on topological spaces, including results of P A Smith from the 1930's, the Conner-Floyd examples from the 1950's, and R Oliver's work in the 1970's. I shall also describe the recent construction of infinite discrete groups that behave like finite groups of prime power order from this point of view. (Groups constructed jointly with Arzhantseva, Bridson, Januszkiewicz, Minasyan and Swiatkowski).
