Title: Dr. Marjorie Lee Browne Colloquium: The Situation of Women and Minorities in Mathematics: A Civil Rights Issue
Abstract: Education has been called the civil rights issue of our generation. Access to quality education and therefore participation in leading roles in society depends on good mathematics preparation, among other things. The speaker will discuss the severe underrepresentation of women and some minorities in mathematics and some of the obstacles that they face to advance their education. Then she will present examples of successful projects aimed at finding and cultivating the talent of women and underrepresented minority populations.
