In this talk I'll give the definition of a toric variety and explain the correspondence between toric varieties and fans, starting with the correspondence between affine toric varieties and cones. It is this associated combinatorial data that makes them interesting objects for combinatorists and easy to handle objects for algebraic geometers. Knowing what "Spec" means in algebraic geometry will be helpful for understanding this talk.
