Combinatorial Hopf algebras and K-homology of Grassmanians

I will describe the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, and non-commutative symmetric functions, along with the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra. I will then say something about their K-theoretic analogs. This is joint work with Thomas Lam.
