Matroids and Hyperplane Arrangements

There are several notions of independence in mathematics which have very similar properties. Matroids are objects which capture the combinatorial essence of these notions. The theory of matroids is extremely useful for studying the combinatorics of various geometric objects. I will describe some of its uses in the study of hyperplane arrangements. No previous background on matroids or hyperplane arrangements will be assumed.
