In this talk we will see how one of the examples of a Hopf algebra, the
universal envelope of a semisimple Lie algebra, may be pushed to obtain
invariants of knots. The theory will be illustrated with the example of the
calculation of the Jones polynomial, the quantum invariant corresponding to
the defining representation of sl_2.
