Hopf Algebras II: Quantum Groups and Knot Invariants

Michael Chmutov

Abstract

In this talk we will see how one of the examples of a Hopf algebra, the universal envelope of a semisimple Lie algebra, may be pushed to obtain invariants of knots. The theory will be illustrated with the example of the calculation of the Jones polynomial, the quantum invariant corresponding to the defining representation of sl_2.
