Reflexive Polytopes

About ten years ago the notion of a reflexive polytope was coined by Batyrev for a lattice polytope whose dual is also a lattice polytope, the corresponding object in algebraic geometry being a Gorenstein toric Fano variety. This definition was motivated by mirror symmetry and indeed turned out to be very useful. Hence there was quite an effort undertaken to classify these objects, producing nearly half a billion of polytopes in dimension four. In this talk the author would like to give a systematic survey of general combinatorial and geometric properties of reflexive polytopes, as well as of characterizations of special classes. Thereby we can mathematically explain some phenomena observed in the computer data.
