The origins of the mirror duality and some of its mathematical consequences will be discussed. I will concentrate on the 'local' aspects, and present some classes of examples of conjectured mirror manifolds. I will also describe an overview of the explicit calculation of Candelas, de la Ossa, Green and Parkes for the 'numbers of rational curves' on the quintic 3-fold.
