Graph colorings in commutative algebra

This will be an expository talk based on a paper of Jesus de Loera. I'll motivate a classical problem in graph theory - when is a graph k-colorable? Then I'll discuss how one can answer this question using Groebner basis techniques and insights from algebraic geometry.
