Zak found some interesting applications of the connectedness theorems to questions involving tangencies of projectives varieties. He then used these results to prove Hartshorne's conjecture that smooth subvarieties of sufficiently small codimension in projective space are linearly normal. This talk is devoted to a presentation of part of Zak's work.
