In a 1934 paper titled "On isolated singularities of surfaces which do not affect the conditions of adjunction", Du Val studied a special type of surface singularities and showed that they can be completely classified by ADE Dynkin diagrams. The main purpose of this talk is to explain how this beautiful classification was done.
