Seminar on Teaching Mathematics

This seminar is organized jointly by the Math Department and the School of Education. For more information, or if you have suggestions or thoughts about the seminar or future speakers, please contact Gavin LaRose at glarose(at)umich(dot)edu

The seminar traditionally meets on occasional Mondays, 5:15-6:30pm, in East Hall 3096, as indicated in the schedule below. Some events are on non-standard days or in other rooms; these are specified in the schedule.

Previous semesters' seminar schedules may be found on the old seminar page.

The Mathematics Teaching Seminar was started in winter, 2002, to bring together faculty and students interested in problems of learning and teaching of mathematics. Over the years the seminar has scheduled outside speakers, and has also probed activities and projects here on our own campus. Recent themes considered by the seminar have included mathematical practices and how they might be assessed. This year we are looking broadly at "Inquiry" or "Interactive" learning: "IBL" broadly construed. We will look at what one might mean by this, where it is used and the evidence we may have for what it does.

This seminar will be appropriate for a range of interested faculty and students, whether they are engaged in research on mathematics instruction, interested in improving assessment and instruction, or seeking to understand students' learning and how teaching matters for learning.
