The seminar will be meeting for Winter 2013 on occasional Mondays,

events are on non-standard days or in other rooms; these are specified in
the schedule.
The Mathematics Teaching Seminar was started in winter, 2002, to bring together faculty and students interested in problems of learning and teaching of mathematics. Over the years the seminar has scheduled outside speakers, and has also probed activities and projects here on our own campus. Last year, we considered as a theme mathematical practices: what the mathematical practices are that we hope our students will have, how we construct learning environments to cultivate these, and how we know that students have acquired them. This year we continue this discussion to include "task design" (or, "lesson planning") that seeks to provide students with opportunities to gain knowledge of or experience with these mathematical practices. We hope also to address assessment of these tasks/lessons.
This seminar will be appropriate for a range of interested faculty and students, whether they are engaged in research on mathematics instruction, interested in improving assessment and instruction, or seeking to understand students' learning and how teaching matters for learning.
