Materials science poses some interesting problems to mathematicians. Some problems at the intersection of these fields are accurate descriptions of microstructure and pattern formation (which was the focus of Prof. Felix Otto's Ziwet lectures), the modeling of self-assembled processes and the efficient simulation of physical nanoscale systems of interest to scientists. This semester we will focus on elasticity, which is key to understanding these problems. As a reference, we will be following "Theory of Elasticity" by Landau and Lifshitz. The seminar should be reasonably self-contained, and little physics background is assumed as a prerequisite. Throughout the semester, we plan to have additional talks on specific applications in materials science as well as the computational/numerical aspects of such applications.
