Title: Pre/Post Testing to Assess Student Knowledge
Abstract: In fall '08, we used a pre-/post-test (the Calculus Concept Inventory, CCI) to evaluate student learning in math 115 (calculus I). The outcomes of this testing have recently been published in the AMS Notices. In this talk we discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of the test and manner in which we used it, and the degree to which this type of pre-/post-test may be applicable to other courses or other teaching environments. This will include an overview of the type of questions posed in the CCI and how they seem suited to the task of evaluating student understanding; a discussion of the benefits and difficulties presented by undertaking this type of pre-/post-testing; and some reflection on the logistical requirements for its implementation.
