Title: What we are learning about successful programs in college calculus
Abstract: Since 2009, the Mathematical Association of America has been engaged in a national study of mainstream Calculus I, Characteristics of Successful Programs in College Calculus, consisting of a largescale national survey with followup case study visits to 17 of the colleges and universities that had the most interesting and promising programs, including the University of Michigan. This will be a brief introduction to what we've learned about the students who take calculus as well as some of the characteristics of those institutions that appear to be successful in encouraging and supporting students toward continuing the study of mathematics.
