Title:  Horocycles in Affine Buildings and Tropicalization

Abstract:   I will explain what horocycles in affine buildings are, emphasizing the analogy with horocycles in symmetric space. Horocycles in affine buildings give a uniform framework for tropicalizing varieties like configurations of flags or Grassmanians: Let X be the Grassmanian Gr(k,n) or the space of configurations of flags. Then the positive part of the tropicalization of X parameterizes positive configurations of some type of horocycle in the affine building. This can be viewed as a generalization of some of the work of Speyer, Sturmfels and Williams on the tropical Grassmanian, and is also related to work of myself and Goncharov and Shen on higher laminations.
