Title: A tale of three scales in crystal evolution
Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss recent progress, and open challenges, in formally linking three scales that characterize crystal surface evolution. These scales include: (i) atomistic dynamics in the context of a stochastic lattice gas model; (ii) the motion of nanoscale line defects (steps) on surfaces; and (iii) fully continuum evolution based on parabolic-type PDEs for the surface height. In particular, I will address the microscale origin of free boundary problems for such PDEs.
