Title: Staircase paths, Young tableaux, and Brill-Noether curves
Abstract: A staircase path is a finite lattice path in which each step is either "up" or "right." I'll start by telling you a surprising theorem on staircase paths that arises from considering random standard Young tableaux. Then I'll show you how we use this result to give a new proof, using degenerations and limit-linear series, of the classical formula of Eisenbud-Harris and Pirola for the genus of the Brill-Noether curve. This is joint work with Lopez, Pflueger, and Teixidor.
