Title: Michigan Calculus: one instructor's approach within a coordinated course
Abstract: I will discuss my approach to teaching Calculus 1 at University of Michigan. I describe how I set the tone in the first class, for the learning environment I wanted to create, by encouraging interaction and group discussion. I present some of the classroom activities I used and how I built my own assessment into the coordinated course. I describe my approach to accessibility and training in good study habits. Throughout the talk, I will comment on my thought processes in designing the instruction, and how my teaching philosophy influenced my methods. If you bring a laptop, you will be able to find the electronic handout at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~daasmith/teaching/handouts.zip.
