Title: Trapezoid Rule As A Spectral Method
Abstract: We teach our Math116 kids that the composite trapezoid rule is a 2nd-order quadrature scheme; however, it is well-known that when applied to periodic and smooth integrands, the trapezoid rule is extraordinary, whose convergence becomes infinite-order, or geometric.
In this talk, we will introduce the periodic trapezoid rule (PTR), give proofs of its geometric convergence, and look at its application to the solution of Laplace equation and other elliptic PDE with the help of potential theory.
