Title:  Mapping class groups and curve complexes

Abstract:   This talk will provide a gentle introduction to the mapping class group of a surface, the group of homotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the surface. We'll start with a few basic examples and see some familiar groups arise. We will then discuss a particular method of studying these groups: studying mapping class group actions on certain simplicial complexes related to configurations of 1-manifolds on the surface.
