Title:  Tensor rank of determinant and permanent

Abstract:   Tensor rank is a straightforward generalization of matrix rank. It gained popularity ever since people realized that the tensor rank of the matrix multiplication tensor more or less determines the complexity of matrix multiplication. I will discuss two important families of tensors, namely the determinant and permanent tensors. I will deal primarily with small cases and hope to convince you that even though the situation becomes complicated very quickly, there is potential for progress.
