Title:  The BSD conjecture and the Gross-Zagier formula

Abstract:   Informally, the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture identifies the set of rational points on an elliptic curve via the order of vanishing of an associated holomorphic function, called the L-function. In this talk, we will give a precise statement of this conjecture and describe some recent progress. We will further explain how modular forms fit into the picture and discuss the Gross-Zagier formula which is an important partial result. Basic familiarity with elliptic curves will be helpful.
