Title:  The very many uses of simplicial objects

Abstract:   I will describe four uses of simplicial objects. First, I will describe the precise sense, via an equivalence of derived categories, in which simplicial sets provide a combinatorial model for the homotopy theory of topological spaces. Second, I will describe how simplicial modules arise as resolutions of modules, via the Dold-Kan-Puppe correspondence. Third, I will describe how simplicial sets can be used to construct a model, namely the quasicategories of Joyal and Lurie, of (infinity,1)-categories. Finally, I will describe how simplicial objects can be used to construct derived variants of algebraic structures.
