REU - Research Experiences for Undergraduates

This program is designed to provide outstanding undergraduates with the opportunity to pursue research under the tutelage of experienced faculty members. Typically students work with a faculty member on a project of mutual interest for 6-8 weeks during the summer. This program is open to students who are external to the University of Michigan

The projects range anywhere from math modeling in the sciences and engineering, running computer simulations or computer experiments to solving abstract and conceptual problems, depending on the background and the interests of student and faculty member.

Each student will be required to write a report about the project, which is due at the project's completion. Samples of such reports can be viewed here.

Each student who participates in the REU program is paid a stipend of approximately $4,000 during the summer.  Students external to the University of Michigan will also receive a housing and travel allowance.

If you are interested in participating and would like to learn more, please contact the Undergraduate Office, (734) 763-4223. For summer REU's, applications will be available in February and are due in March. Please click here (Word) (PDF) for the current REU application. Additional applicant information is available here.

Our REU program is funded by the National Science Foundation. Please click here for more information about the REU program in general as well as other sites. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
