NSF: Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
Information for Applicants

Please read the following carefully and thoroughly before submitting your application!

Preference will be given to students who are declared Mathematics concentrators.  Students from other departments will be considered if funding is available.

Students must be U.S. citizens.

Applicants must not receive their bachelor’s degree prior to the completion of their REU project.  Former U-M REU participants are welcome to apply, but will be given low priority and are strongly urged to apply to programs at other schools.

Applicants should have completed at least the concentration prerequisite sequence (through 217 or equivalent), and ideally several classes beyond the 217 level.

While there is no minimum GPA requirement, applicants should present evidence of strong work in mathematics (B+ or better average).

Students should have a general idea of their area of interest.

Application deadline:  Monday, March 12, 2007  4:00 p.m. Firm!

Program Guidelines:

The REU program is designed to provide outstanding undergraduates with the opportunity to pursue research under the tutelage of experienced faculty members.  It is not intended to function as a "work-study" program, or to support students in learning the fundamental elements of math.  Research topics should utilize knowledge gained in the classroom and apply it to specific projects beyond the realm of what would normally be covered in a regular Math course.

Students are required to submit a written report of their project.  The report should be structured as a scientific research paper, carefully thought out and well-written.  Reports should be of suitable quality for submission to a student Mathematics conference or publication. Papers must be approved by your faculty supervisor.

Students are responsible for keeping Christine Betz Bolang (math-undergrad-office@umich.edu) informed of their project’s progress, as well as any changes in address or phone number.

Stipends:  Reception of the stipend obligates the student to adherence to the above stated guidelines. Students who do not submit an approved research paper by the acceptable deadline will be required to re-pay the stipend.
