Section NExT Funding Guidelines |
|
Section NExTs are encouraged to find funding to support their
activities from whatever sources are appropriate in their region. In
addition, the current grant to the MAA for Project NExT from the
ExxonMobil Foundation contains funds to help Sections with Project
NExT-like programs. These Funds from the National
NExT may be used for
start-up activities (maximum award $3000) or to
continue successful Section NExT programs
while the Section seeks long-term funding (maximum award $5000 less
any amount previously awarded for start-up funds).
All requests for funding are acceptable in paper or electronic form,
though the latter is generally preferred.
Any electronic submission must be in plain text or PDF format,
however.
Since the MAA Sections are diverse, we expect the programs developed in
the Sections to differ. As we expect the objectives of all Section
NExT projects to include those of mentoring newer faculty in the
section and integrating them into the Section and its activities,
however, we do expect all such projects will include the following
features:
- The project will become a regular, long-term program of the
Section.
- There will be an electronic network established to link the
beginning faculty and provide support and resource information.
- There will be some project activities that will take place
before or after the MAA Section meeting.
- National NExT fellows and the Section leadership will be
involved in the formation of the project and in its activities.
If you wish to receive start-up funds to establish a NExT-like program
within your Section, write a letter to Gavin LaRose (at the address given
below) that contains the following information:
- When you plan to begin the program activities.
- Who is serving as coordinator of the Section Project NExT
activity.
- What program components are part of your Section NExT.
- How participants will be recruited and selected, and how many
participants the program expects to serve.
- Your plans for assessment of the Section NExT's effectiveness.
- Your anticipated budget (please note any cost-sharing from the
Section or the Fellows' institutions; also include an indication
of approval by your Section's Treasurer) and the specific
funding request. (The maximum start-up award is $3000 per Section.)
Please include the name and address of the Section Treasurer. If the
proposal is approved, the Treasurer will get a letter from MAA regarding
how payments will be handled and what records must be kept.

Sections that have established and viable NExT-like programs may request
continued funding from the national program, while they seek long-term
funding elsewhere. The maximum continuation award that a Section may
request depends on how much the Section received in start-up funds; no
Section may receive more than $5000 from the national program in start-
up and continuation funds combined.
To apply for continuation funds, send a letter to to Gavin LaRose (at the
address given below) that contains the following information:
- When your Section NExT was established and how many "classes"
of Section Fellows have participated in the program.
- What activities constitute the program cycle for your Section
NExT. Include copies of workshop programs.
- How many national and Section NExT Fellows have participated in
the Section NExT program. (Include names and affiliations if
possible.)
- Evidence of the continuing viability of your Section NExT
(e.g., the number of participants, the number of Section Fellows
who continue to attend Section meetings after being Section NExT
Fellows, evaluation of Section NExT activities, etc.).
- If you received start-up funds from the national NExT program,
a general explanation of how those funds were used (e.g., how much
went for travel and honoraria, meals, photocopying, etc.). Also
include an explanation of any other sources of funding that
have supported the Section NExT program (e.g., Section funds or
cost-sharing from Fellows' institutions, etc.).
- A budget for the requested continuation funds, including
information about how the funds will be spent and what
cost-sharing there will be to extend them.
- A longer-term plan for how the Section NExT will be continued.
Include information about how the attraction and selection of
participants will continue or be developed, any changes that
you anticipate in your Section NExT program cycle, and what
plans you have for making the Section NExT a permanent
component of your Section.
Please include the name and address of the Section Treasurer. If the
proposal is approved, the Treasurer will get a letter from MAA regarding
how the payments will be handled and what records must be kept.
