Homework Assignments

The
following assignments must be done individually or in groups of two and they
must include a cover sheet with a full name/names. Problems are mostly taken
from the textbook. Each homework set consists of four problems. Two of the problems
will be checked for correctness (each 10 points worth) and the remaining two
problems for completeness (each 3 points worth).
Plotting
in MATLAB. All the graphs are to
be graphed using MATLAB, see Kermit
Sigmon’s notes or Peter Blossey and James Rossmanith’s notes (short version/
long
version) for a quick reference. We will use MATLAB and particularly its
dfield7 and pplane7 routines to study dynamical systems. These two routines are
available for a free download. A
good introduction
how to use them can be found at the blog
of Ted Pavlic (OSU). Note that this software allows you to explore various
dynamical systems by yourself via a friendly graphical interface. Interactive
online Java versions of these routines are available at the Rice University website. For direct ODE
computations in MATLAB use numerical integrators ode23 or ode45 which both use
higher order Runge-Kutta methods.
Homework
will be assigned regularly on Thursday and will be due the following Thursday.
The lowest homework score will be dropped.
